Using Interviews and Oral Narratives in the High School Classroom

Workshop& Seminar -- Dr. James M. Brandon, Hillsdale College.

Skills in conducting interviews are useful for a variety of professional fields, and the skills required in dealing with an oral narrative can be pedagogically useful in a plethora of subjects.  This is a short course in oral interpretation/performance studies, based partially on the first chapter of Gray and VanOosting's 1996 book PERFORMANCE IN LIFE AND LITERATURE, and partially on a continuing oral narrative project began by Dr. Ron Shields at Bowling Green State University in the early 1990s.  We will also be examining the works of Studs Terkel and Anna Devere-Smith, as well as some scholarship from TEXT AND PERFORMANCE QUARTERLY.  The class will consist of lectures and workshops focusing on conducting interviews, performing oral narratives derived from these interviews, transcribing interviews, ethics of oral narratives, and working with the performing voice.  This course should be valuable for instructors who teach speech, journalism, forensics, theatre, and literature.  Handouts, tape recorders, tapes, and readings will be provided by the instructor.
